Please DO EYEBALL the heads!
  save yourself hauling them in and perhaps paying to have a visibly cracked head checked!

Been there done that, At least the guy was honest as I hope the shop you deal with is. He took one look at the head and said, "no need, this ones shot" He even had a proper match to the other head for the V6 already built and ready to go! Cheap too. Doubt they will have a 196 head laying around...
