I'd beg to differ on the AMC T5.
I do not believe it is as weak as everyone believes it is!
I have had mine in behind the 4.0L in mine for quite some time.
Yeah, the gear spacing is off a little.
But with 2:79's or 3:08's it is certainly driveable and not very objectional as far as gear spacing.
I want to take mine out, but have just not felt up to it, so I keep driving on it.
I've never opened it up from the day I bought it!

Yeah they can be broke and they did break.
I tend to think if it has survived till now it is probably one of the "good" ones.

I believe that being on a budget I would concentrate on the engine and not stress out too much on the trans till the need arises.
