James listed some great references. I can't recommend BJ's book enough, especially to an AMC newcomer. He covers pretty much everything! He just covers a thorough rebuild and some minor power upgrades, but if you've been a hot rodder that's all you really need. All gasoline engines respond to cam changes and such. You can ask about what cam, intake, etc. to use, but having the building details at your fingertips is the most important part. He covers things the factory manuals assume you know. 

You will hear a lot about AMC V-8 "oiling problems", but there really aren't any. If this is to be a cruiser or only an occasional strip car, you've nothing to worry about. All-out drag and/or road racing does strain the oiling system in some areas. Not really "problems" in my mind -- those cases exceed the design criteria. Even big three engines need attention in oiling and other areas when run under extreme circumstances. 

The only ting I can recommend that no one pointed out is a 68-69 TSM for the rest of the car. A TSM (Technical Service Manual) is the AMC factory manual. It won't cover your engine or trans (the 73 TSM on-line will), but will cover everything else.
