While your waiting.
Spray the mounting hardware and fittings with PB blaster or Kroil and let it soak!
Spray daily.
With this method I removed 99% of the bolts and brak hardware on my 69!
I knew it was coming apart, so I would spray most anything I htought would need to come apart at some point.
Worked great! Even the exhaust unbolted from the manifold!

Glad you found the problem.
That's what it sounded like to me.
Don't be too quick to blame the last owner. If the fluid was not completely flushed or the mast does not have a good seal on it, moisture wicks in quick and the rust does not take long to work!
  Plus "couple of years ago" could be 10-15 as time passes quicker as you get older!

Does not seem like I have had my American for 15 years, yet it is true!
