I wish I could help you out.
I'd just swap the crank, or perhaps, evil thought.
Toss the standard trans in the American!
I have heard the torque tube tail is not an issue, uses same seal, just has that larger square thing to bolt the TT to.
 
Then you have all the clutch linkage issues, which I could help you with if it was 64 or newer.
I'm not much good at all with a 63 or a 196, sorry :[

You should have moved east, then maybe I could at least come over and comiserate...
