Yeah, little 3.125" (3-1/8") bores! Beer can (well, my koozie here) is about 2-3/4". But the 172 wouldn't be any smaller -- it would be the same! The old L-heads (172.6, 184, 195.6) all had the same 3.125" bore with a different stroke (crank and rods).

Remember I said the 195.6ohv has "beer can sized cylinders"? Did you 
think I was exaggerating? Gander this:

Note that the piston with the can in it is not at BDC (see the one to 
it's right, not at TDC). I didn't want to turn the motor seeing how it's 
been sitting for 30 years... but you can see that at BDC about 1/4" of 
the beer can would be above the deck!

If this was a 172, I think the beer can might actually be the cylinder's 
diameter!
