Re: [Amc-list] Classic Brakes

Following is my only rebuilt master cylinder story.

Back in the late 70s I was in Flagstaff, AZ staying with family friends.
I decided to make a two week trip to the L.A. area just to say I'd been
there.
On the return trip to Flagstaff the white Javelin suddenly became very
difficult to slow down.
By using the park brake, and feeling the similarities in using the park
brake and the foot pedal, I realized the
portion of the master that operates the front brakes had popped it's seals.
The car braked the same using either method.
When I finally made it to Flagstaff, Rambler Mentality set in.............
I went to the auto parts store and decided to buy a rebuild kit instead of a
new or rebuilt master. It was cheaper.
It was quite interesting rebuilding the master, luckily I had brought all my
tools with me, including my wheel cylinder hone.
I borrowed the family friends 3/8 drill motor and cleaned up the bore in the
master, and installed the kit.
Bleeding it became very interesting. I didn't want to bleed it in the car,
because if it were to squirt on the paint it may stain it forever.
So I went down the block to the neighbor who had a bench vise. I finally
managed to get all the air out of the master and reinstalled it in the car.
That master worked until I decided to put discs in the car a few years ago.
Rebuilding your own master is very do - able.
If you have any doubt as to your abilities to rebuild things, you should get
new. If you have money and no time, get new.
If you are rebuilding or restoring your car, get new, it's a much better
starting over point.
Without a doubt these guys are correct, new is most often the best way to
go, but if you have a bad case of RM, well.................
I would still be using that master if it weren't for the fact that it's
sized wrong for disc brakes up front. I could have bored it and kept using
it, except common sense finally came out, I have enough money now.....for a
while at least..........
I still have that original master, and I may even bore it some day so it
will work with discs and rebuild it again. Rambler Mentality never leaves
you.
