Thanks! I will go RTFM!

I think this weekend at least I will car-wash it all spotless and get 
under there with a bright light and see if there's any detectable gaps, 
cracks, loose bolts or other stupidness around the bell. What the hell, 
30 minutes with a bright light might reveal things.
