I know I could have bought/scrounged them cheaper, but there is a seller on ebay that sells stamped steel holders with all brushes/sprngs new shipped to your door for $31. They are actually slightly larger brushes than stock. both taller and wider.
   Starter is up and running again.
As per my usual brain fartedness, I miised  chipped teeth on two spots of the bendix, however it never skipped sliiped or growled before so I assume it was done at some point in the past. I gnored them and put it back in.
