Re: [Amc-list] 58 Rambler American, wish to install aftermarket radio

Mark, if you use a relay go a bit further. Most auto parts stores carry a small fuse block with six fuses (the new plastic push-in kind). Run a wire from the battery to that, then use a switch activated relay to power the fuse box. Then any time you need to add something there it is! I mounted one on the passenger side firewall under the dash of my car where it was out of the way yet easy to get to.

There should be a wire hanging under the dash near the center for the factory radio. If not, there is a circuit breaker near the turn signal flasher. The side with one wire comes from the accessory lead on the switch -- you could connect to that or to the other side of the breaker (which basically takes the place of the fuse box, the lights all run off that auto reset breaker, and that's about all the old car has that draws much power). You could use the lead off the cigarette lighter, but that appears to be connected to the "run" position on the switch, not "accessory", so you couldn't run the radio with the switch "turned backwards", only with the ignition on.

I need to know where I can pull an ignition switched 12+ for the radio.
For the constant 12+, I will just pull from the battery.

Can anyone help me out? I am not averse to using a relay to avoid having
too much draw on the ignition switched 12+.
