    From what I recall of the wiring on the factory tachs I doubt you can run an HEI and get it to work.
IIRC, factory tach takes 
Coil + to tach, thru tach, Coil +.
I'd almost expect the amerage draw to be wrong, perhaps frying the tach on initial crank?
Maybe I'm wrong.
Anyway, if the cluster does fit and the look is what you want, pull the tach, send it out and have new guts installed.
There's a blurb in dec, hotrod on cluster rebuilds using VDO gauge internals.
No reason they can not do an AMC tach, set it up for V-8 and be calibrated dead on, instead of the factories, "close enough"!!!
