solar power satellites.  search for 'gerard k. o'neill'...  the
startup costs and lead time bring new meaning to the word
'staggering', but the long term payoff is too.

this has been floating around - so to speak - since the mid '70s with
no real action, but i recently read somewhere that the dod is getting
interested, presumably for a secure, uninterruptable, and unlimited
battlefield power source.  that doesn't mean their work wouldn't pay
off for the rest of us -- remember, they funded development of the
internet.

i agree, there's no one replacement for oil.  i mentioned butanol
solely with respect to gasoline and the existing fleet of vehicles.
biodiesel is better and diesel power could easily be rolled into the
production stream.
