There's an excellent post in there (twmattox) (with those foolish things
I think called "facks") which reminds me of one of the critical deciding
factors in gear oil: is there brass/bronze in there, or not?
* Old transmissions (T-96...) with plain bearings and brass synchronizer
gears CANNOT use "extreme pressure" additives, eg. anything with sulphur
(sulphates, etc) as those EAT COPPER AND ZINC METAL (that's in
brass/bronze).
* That's a separate issue from the viscosity choice stuff that's partly
subjective and use-based.
