If your doing different colors, I'd lay some masking tape over the top of the block.
Then spray it the Gray color.
Paint the head and other assorted items, then wipe down the top of the block and put it all back together.
You can use a cardboard shield to spot touchup areas that look scuffed after it is assembles, bolts etc;

  Make sure you wait the curing period out if you use the newer ceramic paints as they will lift and screwup if you spray to soon but after the initial period.

   Been there Done that, it sucks...
