according to car and driver, the base weight for an american was:
'65	2550
'66	2602
'67-8	2700

with the 4 cyl jeep motor a '65 could easily be nudging 2300!  you
could have a problem finding light enough front springs...	;^>

i'm not sure you'd have to regear it.  there was a 4-cyl 'miser' pkg
for the comanche that had 3.31 gears; allowing for the american's
weight and shorter tires the stock 3.08 should be fine.  although it
was cammed differently, the '66-9 199 3sp + o/d optional rear was
3.08, and i can tell you from 2 decades of experience, the 199 will
pull 3rd from 20 on up and is plenty ready to shift again by 40, about
the speed the o/d was set to cut in at.
