Clean hell out of it, best you can. Then get some KROIL from www.kanolabs.com and load it up and let it soak for a while. 

KROIL is some of the best stuff in the world for this situation. Kano Labs has a brochure they can send you telling of some of the miraculous things done with their products, and this engine is a prime example of something their products have saved. 

I'm not trying to sound like an advertisement for the company, but I've used their stuff and it's awesome.

One thing--if you do call and order from them, they require you to have a business name. When I order from them I just use my local car club name and that's sufficient.
