[Amc-list] 232 crank shaft damper

I sent this already yesterday but it doesn't seem to have made it. If this shows up twice, I apologize.

 I was putting power steering on my 64 Classic (232 engine) last year and I got side tracked. 
 I finally got started back on it yesterday.
 I had taken the crank shaft damper to find an accessory pulley that would bolt up. Well, I was putting it back on and while tightening down the crank shaft pulley, it seems the damper tightened all the way up to the timing chain cover and mashes against it. Am I leaving off some type of spacer that I forgot about?
