If you're wearing respiratory protection (a fitted
respirator with dust cartridges) silica sand won't
hurt you and it will do the jobs you mentioned.  I've
used it on auto parts (outside) many times.  It's
cheap but it does tend to break up and make lots of
dust if you reuse it more than a couple of times. 
Don't just wear one of those elastic band dust masks
though.  Get a good respirator and learn how to take
car of it.

If you want more sophisticated media the Eastwood
catalog is one source, but I live near large cities
where different types of media are available locally.
