The opposite -- the hub on the serpentine balancer is SHORTER than the crank nose.  Just use a washer that will fit inside the balancer hub and over the crank snout to push it back further. I think HESCO sells one, but it's easy enough to make -- get a washer (or two) to fit the snout then grind them down. Takes a few minutes though! total thickness needs to be at least 0.30". If it's a bit more no problem -- the balancer will only push back to the shoulder on the crank snout. If you could get the balancer pushed back all the way the belt would probably keep it there, but can only say "probably"...

So you are saying the balancer on my 83 Eagle 258
(serpentine belt) is too long to fit on the 77 258 in
my Gremlin, right?
