I posted the original post about Alclad. Being a model car builder for more years than I care to remember even before learning to drive on the old mans 60 American in 1962 .  Today we use Castrol Super Clean to strip paint from plastic model  parts by submerging them into it. I recently stripped original paint from a Johan 64 Rambler American model. I submerged the dash gauge panel for my latest 74 Hornet to strip off the factory finish. Before using Castrol I would suggest a test on a replaceable or extra part. Plastic in the last 40-50 years has changed and could dissolve. A friend lost a vintage AMT 58 Chebby model kit using Castrol. Just a word of advice. I have never had a problem with 74 and newer AMC plastic I used Castrol on.

Nope. AMC 20s behind 232 or larger engines in all big cars, 65+. In 65 there was a fleet only Rebel with 199 that used an AMC 15, but all others used the 20 only. Americans used the AMC 15 with the 232 and Hornets with the 258, but all big cars used the 20. No 15s were ever made for the four link suspension, just leaf springs (except for 56-64 195.6 powered big cars with torque tubes and coil springs).

I'm aware of Tony Z.'s business. He was also listed as the contact for a club. That might have gone away with the main American Motorsports organization, most likely did, but the last info I had still had him listed as the contact for a local club (about three years ago, a year or two after American Motorsports "died"). 

The contact address I have for SoCalAMX is in West Covina. I understand the club encompasses a larger area though. Looking at a map, I should have said it's in the "greater LA area", a much better description than mentioning WC as I did. My apologies!

Uh, Tony Z. is a business operation and Amer. Motorsp. hasn't existed since 
the mid '90's.

Socalamx is not located in west covina. it's a southern calif. club; hence 
the name socalamx! Come visit southern cal. sometime and we'll help you 
navigate the amc geographic waters. Several of the club members live around 
the LA county area, which may include WC.

so, would it be a t-14/r10 behind a 232 in the 67
rebel or not? and will it bolt to my 196? will the
electric wipers be much of a hassle to adapt to my
vacume wipers? 

if it is an amc 20 rear axle, (it did look like one,
different than my 15 in my 62 classic) it SHOULD hold
up ok behind a mild 304 just fine then? they are
fairly easy to get 1 piece shafts for also correct?
and rear disk set up and all i beleive. 

would be GREAT if i can get that amc 20/4link put in
there without MUCH problem. and then if it is the
t14/r10, i can use that till my 304/t5 are ready to
drop in, then tom, or mark can have the t14/r10. ;-)

that way, i can get the bugs all worked out on my open
driveline, WHILE im building my preferred drive train.


by the way, anyone know what gears SHOULD be in that
axle with the od?

according to gremlinx.com, IF it is a 67, (the guy did
not know for sure, i will get pics and post so maybe
someone can tell me for sure, or if someone could tell
me #'s to look for next time i go by it to look for)
it could have t96, or t96j. if i have to get under it
to look, how can i tell if it is a t14? i know what my
t96 looks like, is there much visual difference
between them? i would jump all over this car if it
ends up having the t14. it all seems to be intact. od
cable, and everything. there should still be an
electrcal switch for it in the later 60's shouldnt
there? i did not see it, but i didnt look REAL hard.

Dave,

To identify the AMC 20 count the number of bolts that retain the cover.
If there are twelve bolts it's a 20.  I have heard a rumor that the flange
welded to the axle tubes has the same bolt pattern as a Ford 9 inch.
Can anyone verify that?
Any way this may open the field a bit for rear axle disc brake setups.
But this site has disc brake setups for the 20.

Not sure if this set up has park brakes.

Almost any aftermarket axle maker will fab you a set of one piece
axles for your AMC 20. However if you are installing a mild 304,
and you retorque the axle nuts, you won't need a beefier axle.

But then again if................
you want to road race the car.....................................

I read one account in the NAMDRA newsletter about a fella who
had Ford 9 inch size axle tubes welded into an AMC 20 center
section and 9 inch style axles and axle bearings fitted to it.
He was having trouble breaking axles road racing his AMX or Javelin.
He had bigger disc brakes fitted too, don't remember what kind.

If it is a 67, it will not have a T-14. 1968 was the first year for it. 
According to my parts book, it will probably have a T-96J if it's a 232 
or a T-96H if it's a 199.
