The two shift levers are interlinked together with a rod, two
balls and a spring. It provides the detent and also prevents
1-R and 2-3 simultaneous engagement.

If even one ball falls out, neither 1-R or 2-3 will have much
of a detent. So -- if 2-3 feels normal, but 1-R doesn't, it's
likely not that thing.

Crawl onto the frozen junk under your car you call dirt, pop
out the clip, and see if 1-R is nice and detenty :-)
