Yeah, they had to go and change the tranny to bell housing pattern after 63! All the old Ramblers I've had the most experience with are 61-63. Had a few later ones, but never did any extensive parts swapping. Never noticed that the 62 and earlier trannys had a different bolt pattern to the bell than 63 and later (64 and later Americans)! The engine mount system -- early four point/late three point is the difference as Tom pointed out earlier. I only had early cars that I needed to cross parts with, only used later parts in 64+ cars. Had the 63 T-96 w/OD rebuilt (Classic, three point engine mounts), so didn't notice that it was different. Did note that the 63 (Classic) trans bolted to a 79 multi-trans bell, but the bearing retainer hole is larger. 

The late model flywheel will bolt up to an early engine, but it's a bit larger in diameter. It might not fit under the early bell, and if it does you'll have to shim the starter out to mesh with the ring gear. I doubt there's enough room to move the starter. Since the starter bolts to the bell you'd have to slot one of the starter bolt holes in the starter housing, and I doubt the bolt hole "ears" are wide enough to move the starter out and still hold it on, provided there's enough room in the starter hump of the bell.

But the pre-64 Americans, it (later model T-14) won't fit without substantial hacking. A 69 T-14 will not fit in my 1963 four-mount bellhousing; in addition to the driveshaft length (and lack of OD...). Shifter linkage stuff, yeah, but those are relatively straightforward mods. Then there's speedo cable issues...

Hey, do you know if a post-71 flywheel will fit on a pre-72 six engine?
