I worked on a few VW's too.
Never liked anything about the experience.

I was intrigued by Extreme 4X4's Diesel VW engine swap into a Samuri.
Sure was interesting, but I would not use anything more then the engine!
even that would make me nervous.

Strange thing about the VW diesels.
My wifes cousin drove a Rabbit diesel truck for years, put 300,000 miles on it, no troubles.
Last year he bought a new VW diesel to drive again.
Last month, he traded it on a new Altima!
I'm guessing the new VW did not live up to the old ones reliability as I've not had time to talk to him about it, yet.

Seems, the people that like the german cars are blind to the costs...
