Re: [Amc-list] info on eagle transmission

Take the pan off (without flipping it) and see what's in the pan for shavings. Less is better. Check the converter neck for wear and discoloration (they tend to crack) I personally put a can of STP engine oil treatment (or similar engine honey) in the pan to boost the oil thickness which causes the clutches to engage faster and firmer, leading to longer trans life. (less slippage too)
The 998 currently in my '82 Spirit had abuse and neglect to the point it would hardly shift when cold and slipped when hot till I did that. Now it shifts like new.

Thanks everyone for the info on the auto tranny. I bought the 998 that I found for sale. I intend to flush it and change the filter before I install it.
Is there any real way to check it to be sure it is good before installing? The guy said it worked when it was pulled and did say if there was a problem he would refund my money but I would hate to go through the trouble of changing it and find out it is bad.

Thanks.
