Umm this used to be ocasionally needed, today it's MANDATORY if the car has 
sat for those four years. Dave and I both had to do full valve jobs due to 
gunked up gas. It looks fine until it burns and turns into something 
resembling roofing tar. If the car has sat with the same gas for more than 
a year? two years? who knows? you will almost certainly ruin the valves.

This didn't used to be true, or at least, the number of years it took was 
MANY more than a few...


Like Matt says, change all the hoses. They're cheap, they will leak. 
They're old, and the new gas formulations are known to eat old fuel line 
rubber.

No one in California would touch mine for < $500. I did it all myself 
mostly, it was the hardest part of getting this car on the road, sorry to 
say, don't mean to scare you off! Mine probably had 10 year old gas in it 
though a half tank that evaporated down to a crust, to which I added fresh 
gas which dissolved it. Ouch!
