my research indicated that adhesion isn't that good without adequate
prep work; you have to scuff up the surface pretty well or it'll just
bead up.  one site even said a good job is 75% prep, 25% application.

this may be because it's usually applied over paint.

i also found several bedliners that are sprayed on -hot- and got the
distinct impression that you can't equal the quality of these coatings
with anything you can apply yourself at home.  of course they also
cost several times as much...

i wouldn't put them down over -bare- metal.  i'd want
a phosphoric acid prep wash like martin senour 'iron etch', to make
sure there's no rust and leave an iron phosphate layer [which looks
like bare metal only dull/non-shiny]
a zinc phosphate rustproofing primer like martin senour 'triple etch'
a urethane paint primer
scuff etc. as recommended by the bedliner people
then the bedliner

once it's down properly it's there to stay, and it's much tougher than
any other kind of surface coating.
