I think you're probably right. I bought my car late 69 and moved to Eastern Canada late 72.
My memory was that it was a 71 car bought in late 70 but you guys who know Gremlins will know better than me.
The 401 he ordered had the "Machine" intake that he put a Holley on and a set of headers and he was good to go.
Except for the carb and headers, no one from the Brand X crowd could tell it wasn't a 304 until he ran a few guys.
I remember one guy with a 396 Camaro that sold his car because he took so much ribbing after losing to the Gremlin.
Lots of stories from those days.

Don, I think you meant the fall of 71 when the 72's were coming out.
