Re: [Amc-list] more...

AMC changed the bell housing to engine bolt pattern for the sixes in 72. 50s-71 have a smaller diameter flywheel and b9olt pattern, 72+ is the same as the GEN-2/3 V-8s. So the 78 trans won't bolt to the 65 engine. You are lucky to have a 232! You can use that water pump and pulley on the 258.

AMC never used a two speed auto trans. What you had was the three speed Flash-O-Matic. It had "D" with a little "1" to the upper left, "2" to the upper right of "D". Normal driving was done in D1, NOT D2. In D1 it shifted through all three gears. In D2 it started in second gear, skipping first. The reasoning was that it was easier to take off in slippery conditions (snow and ice) by starting in second instead of first. Later models (Shift-Command... around 67 or 68) could of course be manually shifted and started in any gear.

The only way to eliminate the chrome around the windshield (actually stainless steel trim) is to replace the windshield gasket, I believe. The strip should be embedded in the center of the gasket, with about 1/4" of gasket showing on each side. It wasn't until 68 or so that the windshields were held in with a urethane sealant and used a snap on chrome moulding. I think it would look goofy without the strip, but that's just me! Actually, it just looks cheap. I have chromed door handles and bumpers, but shaved all the side trim. I've seen Americans with no chrome except the strip around the windshield (painted door handles to match body color). Doesn't look bad.

Thanks to all for the information. Am bouncing some things in my head.. the 65 does have a 232. The Hornet a 258 of course. The 78 trans would be preferred, my previous American had the 2sp tranny and I always wished it would/could shift into another gear at speed.. These are different bolt patterns altogether yes?? The 3sp will not bolt to the 232?? A month or so ago I was working on a deal for swapping the 258 to a paint/body guy for some future work.. of course he came back yesterday and said was wanting to do it now.. How about thoughts on chrome around the glass. Can this be eliminated without looking too goofy?? I was thinking about shaving most all chrome off car.
