Big cities suck, except when big cities are great :-) Chuy's Electric is an 
old family-owned place with a huge customer base. There's picnic benches! 
People like me drive in with parts to rebuild/exchange, but they also do 
limited diagnosis and repair on-the-spot if you drive in. Very old 
fashioned.

re: those Delco gens, the founder's son said that while they still have 
adequate stocks of them, there's more outright purchases than exchanges 
these days, as people making old motors and rods are building from junk 
cores etc and not running cars.

The family name is Navarro, no relation to Barney the racer (I asked :-)

Somewhere I saw a curve of rpm vs. ampere output (I thought the 63 01 tsm, 
but I cna't find it there) little charge til over 2000. They weight a ton 
(I forgot about lifting into place with one arm under the car and not drop 
on my nose!), contain a lot of iron and more copper than an alternator, the 
brushes carry full output load, bigger, far, far more labor intensive to 
make (all those commutator bars are hand soldered), ...
