Typically in the "old days" this was caused by the trans mount collapsing and the exhaust banging against the crossmember. It usually took new mounts and occasionaly we got "creative" and rearranged things for more clearance as even with new mounts things are a little too close for comfort. Resulting in rattles, vibrations and banging.
