Re: [Amc-list] On an AMERICAN?? This big? They are airlinertires.........

The T5 from that period is the non world class trans and gets dissed a lot.
I have not broken mine and it has seen some abuse. I have not rebuilt it either. It is as found.
The Eagle trans does equally OK. If you do not power shift it and generally beat it, it will hold up OK.
To get some improvement you can go witht he guts out an 83-84 Mustang or 82-88 Camaro. This gets you to about 265 ftlb rating. I think the amc is 240-245ish, don't quote me.
One of the killers is peole get confused and put trans fluid in the non world class trans. It needs Gear lube! 70W-90, IIRC. trans fluid will kill it!
WWWW.5speeds.com used to build the high torque world class trans for Jeeps, but they quit when the ax15 became easily available. I'd think they may be able to help you build one for an Eagle.
Keep in mind that all the Eagle T5's are the same, 4cyl and 6 cars got the same trans. Two wheel drive cars got the same gear ratios but different tailshafts.
I would dearly love to get my hand son a second tailhousing for a Spirit or Concord!
