Not just all AMC cars of the era but as you articuled, most all cars.  AMC just had more 6 cylinder cars on average than the other guys resulting in their cars seeming to be even more doggy than their competitors with V-8s.  

Overall, it was a dismal time for performance in all American cars although my then wife's 1974 Camaro with a factory 350 ran great and sounded even better after I de-smogged it and put a true dual exhaust on it!
