Well I wonder how much science there is behind this. Just forthehellofit I 
looked up the 63 American on the gabriel classic parts locator. Of course 
no front shock listing, but there's a rear part, 82155.

(Oddly "1963" year is not in the pulldown list; 1962, 1964 are.)

Looking 82155 up in their what-does-this-fit page and the same shock is 
used for 62 Americans 67-69 Ambassadors, 59-60 Buick Le Sabre(!), 62 
Corvette, ...

The 63 01 weighs what, 2900 - 3100 lbs?

The 60 Le Sabre, 4000 - 6000 lbs?!

Go figure.
