As stated before, I ran 196/65R15 tires on 7" wheels. I have run G78 tires on 6" 15" wheels in the past, when that's the smallest cheap tire (recaps back in 78-79!) I could get. They fit okay, still 1/4" between tire and spring, and no rubbing. The G78s were a bit big though.

Frank, what size did you manage to get under that american of yours? I'm 
trying to get the original diameter (26") that I can actually buy. 15" 
wheel. I worry about clearance...
