Found the link! Click on it (or cut and paste in your browser). When you get there go to the "English Website" then the prototype pages. It seems the six cylinder option was explored from the beginning, so AMC may have had that as a contingency plan all along. Mid and rear engine applications (both rear drive, of course) were considered, but not front drive.

I'd be interested in seeing that article.
Still, even if the car had been designed as FWD the change to rear drive would probably have been cheaper then scrapping the whole design. In the 70's the rear suspension would have probably been designed as a live axle anyway to keep costs down.
