Re: [Amc-list] Amc-list Digest, Vol 8,

The good thing about AMCs and Javelin/AMXs in particular is that most parts are directly interchangable. Altough collectors are becoming increasingly focused on factory spec originals, if you are keeping the car for yourself then my suggestion is always to make it the way you will most enjoy it.

If you decide to muscle it up for looks, you can readly put a cowl air induction hood on it and get a Javelin/AMX tic, tac gauge cluster with the fisheye aluminum dash and matching door panels along with the AMX grille and road wheels. On the other hand, if you are looking to improve on the road performance, a stout 360 or even a 401 can exchanged for the 304 although you may want to swap out the auto tranny and install a 4 speed, beef up the suspension and put in a bigger radiator (if it is a non AC car) from the original 304 car's non high performance drivetrain. The 304 can also be beefed up fairly well but its performance will be limited to the lower flow volume, small valve heads, low compression pistons and two barrel carb unless you swap out those parts as well.

Either way, original small cubic inch displacement AMC factory cars do not command big money in the market place so I suspect your modifications, if done properly, will neither add nor subtract from the overall car's value but will provide you with a car that is a lot more fun to drive.

Dan Curtis
