Re: [Amc-list] Thomas Garner, 64 Classic (Tom Jennings)

There's also pertronix if your not an old parts swapper, of course you shouldnt be here if your not! :]
The pertronix allows a dead stock appearance.
My first swap onto any early six is electronic ignition of some form. A new ignition coil also! A 40 year old coil isn't putting out what it used.
I like a nice new coil, electronic ignition of you choice. I used to go for 8mm plug wires, now there are some god 7mm ones so you can saty with them if you want. I also like angle or side gap or multi ground plugs that open the spark kernel up to the chamber. This is all my personal choice and others will differ on the plugs for sure, so be it.
You will notice a little quicker start and a smoother idle with the hotter spark. Even in my 90's efi 4.0L's I see improvements with those plugs. Mostly the occasionaly dropped cylinder idle smooths out. Or could be I'm nuts.
   Maybe that head injury too!
My first mods to my 69 232 were, 81 two barrel carb intake and exhaust. You need to do port work on the exhaust to taper them out to match up with the big port head. You also need to plug the AIR ports. I used brass pipe plugs I picked up at lowes. Tapped the AIR to pipe thread then threaded the plugs in and ported after they were installed.
Once you get the porting done it is all as close to a true bolt on as you can get. The exhaust bolts right up. No more donut to burn out either! I also went duraspark. It ran sweet at that point and was quite well mannered. You can even maintain stock appearance by painting it all and not chroming it up.
I wasn't happy though, never am. The end result is the 4.0L, EFI, T5 and soon to be 9" rear... Oh and I'm thinking if I don't delve to deep into my personal savings I may do a stroker or possible a nice roots blower, or some other from of compressed insanity to suit my midlife crisis. At least thats what I'll blame it on to my wife!
