You can't bore a 290/304 out to 343/360 dimensions and expect it to last
and etc.

The statement that you can't do this, does not conform to the generally

accepted  story of the Service Replacement Block which is un-marked 
as to the size, as it is stored unfinished, but understood to be
machined
to the appropriate dimensions as needed for warranty repairs. There 
must be some fudging around capability as manufactured, although it very
well may depend on what year one is talking about.
