I guess I was misunderstood. I meant the 904 trans and 2.8 went away soon 
before the takeover (if they'd had 1 more year, Jeep would've put AMC back 
in the black)

jim's comment that the 2.8 was replaced when 'der mopar' took
over.
it was [a year earlier actually iirc], but not cause-and-effect.
