The low-buck solution that Jeepers have discovered (mostly XJ owners with strokers) to the AW4 "weakness" is to buy the 2wd Toyota-spec A340 that has slightly higher torque/hp ratings and swap the required output parts.  The last time I did it, it was to the tune of $300 each for *new* transmissions + labor.

The only problem is that this only works cheaply for 96-down AW4's.  If you have a 97-up with the different housing and sensors, you need to swap housings (basically raiding the new trans for all its guts).  Still works out well, but could be more costly if you are not the DIY type.

They don't cause me any concern, though.  Run them till they blow up and just replace them.  They last long enough, are common enough, and cheap enough for a failure to be acceptable under abuse.
