Re: [Amc-list] 65 classic

A: I had a similar problem a couple years ago with an '83 Dodge B150 van
with 999 and slant six. It went forward just fine but locked up like it was
in forward and reverse at the same time (I even took the brakes apart and
checked them) I took the trans out and rebuilt it (did a quickie job, but I
couldn't find anything wrong inside other than 1 set of clutches was nearly
burnt up from trying to move it) I even took the valve body apart (carefully
so the ball bearings didn't fly away) and cleaned it, but I didn't remove
the tailstock. Put it back in and it did the exact same thing! I said the
heck with it and drove all over the place, including taking my kids home to
Canada. On the way back, the torque converter imploded and the van screeched
to a halt on the I-5 (fortunately I was able to bootleg turn it while
sliding, which dislodged the problem enough I could roll down the offramp
out of traffic)
I took it to the guys here (Sea Tac trans) and they tore it apart (and
like me, they skipped the tailstock) and once again it did the same thing. I
drove it back to them (went forwards just fine) and when we pulled the tail
stock, the output shaft bearing's cage was broken and it would roll one way,
but lock the other! New bearing installed and all was fine (for awhile.
turned out a LPOS got stuck in the governor and made it hammer through the
gears. Took it back to them and while test driving it, it got worse so the
tech and I turned back and the back of the case sheared off just as we
cruised into the shop.
I had a spare case (just a non-lockup 904) and they did right by me by
building it and installing it for no extra cost.

In your case, the BW's valve body could be worn, engaging forward and
reverse at the same time, or an output bearing like mine, or something else.

well, i got the car running. it moves. i put it in
gear lastnight, and it jumped harder than usual. it
now seems to not come out of first. even in park and
neutral. its still locked in first. reverse? psh,
anyone ever play with a transbrake? exactly what its
doing.... interesting. i pulled her up to the garage
door and shut her down. didnt try to move her or
nothing today. rpm's might not have been up a little
higher than usual when i put it in gear, but they were
not very far off idle. MAYBE 1200 at most. anyone ever
experience this? i dont THINK that trans fluid would
gel up or something strange like that would it?

even in park, it still acts like its in 1st and the
brake is on.
