As Andrew noted, it can be done with factory parts. If the 65 American came with a 195.6 engine and not a 232 (it most likely did have the 195.6) it's not hard to make mounts for the V-8 -- the 195.6 mounts directly to the crossmember with no "perches". That makes it easy to make perches from rectangular tubing that bolt on. I did that to put a 4.0L in my 63 Classic (that had a 195.6 originally). There is the deal with the torque though. If you're not going to run it hard you should be fine, but can you keep your foot out of it? I know I'd have to "romp" on it every now and then. The body can be reinforced without too much work though.
