Re: [Amc-list] 15" rims for Ambo wagon?

A: My '82 Spirit's previous owner picked up a set of 235/75/14s (L78/14?) just before Christmas. He was quite disappointed with the lack of winter traction they afforded and bought himself an '81 Jeep Wagoneer (also 6 cyl auto). Then I got the car from him and took it to my cabin (through about a foot of snow) while he drove my 2wd Comanche and we switched out on the hills as he had trouble controlling the throttle till he got some practice in. Tuesday, I will be getting the AW4 (2wd version) to put in the Spirit and once I get the Jeep HO EFI dialed in, I'll be changing tires to 15" (Probably 225/75/15 on Concord rims) and the old tires will go onto my tandem trailer I hope to assemble soon (I need it to move all my stuff by the end of Sept from the apartment to my cabin or the scrapyard. 1/2 my J4000 will join the scrap heap) Tomorrow (monday) my second son and I will be pulling the AMC 4 cyl motor and 5 speed from an '85 Jeep XJ 2dr (being cannibalized for parts) and putting it into my old '86 Comanche longbox I recently got back (it didn't pass the emission test with the amount of blowby the 300,000 mile 2.5L was putting out for some reason! <WG>. If all goes well (and I don't pick up any more projects like the '82 Capri I've assembled for a single mom friend of mine) I may finally have my '84 J10 running before the snow flies this year, with an LPG powered 4.6L stroker.

215/75/15 should be pretty equal to the 225/75/14.

I've been trying to find tires for a 1971 Ambassador 3-seat
wagon and
am finding that the large 14" size that it uses (H78-14, or in
today's
sizes, 225-75R14) is just about impossible to find. My regular
tire
shop says "nobody makes that size any more." The tirerack.com
web
site doesn't list any that size, going one size down to
215-75R14
just brings up a couple of selecions for trailer tires.

I was thinking that it might be easier to find suitable tires in
a 15" size. What 15" rims from "Brand X" vehicles would fit the
Ambo?
(Chrysler? Ford?) What 15" tire size would give about the same
overall
tire diameter as the originals?
