Bob,

Having just had problems with a bad ground in my
Gremlin which caused wierd problems with the turn
signals, I recommend that you check and clean all of
the body grounds on your Marlin, including the ground
connection or connection to your instrument cluster.  

The fact that you have two problems now, and I assume
did not change anything but the alternator, leads me
to think you may have one or more bad ground
connections.
