If it idles and all that, and static timing is right, but it
doesn't have enough power to pick up revs in gear with the car
on the ground, it's probably not ignition timing. Check the
mechanical advance though, it's easy: rev it up in neutral, by
2500 -- 3000 rpm you should have 15 - 20 degrees more advance
(it's in the TSM). If not, that could be it. Broken distributor
weight springs, or gooped stuck. How old is the distrib?

First off, with the throttle open wide, there's no vacuum
advance, because there's no vacuum. Vacuum advance is NOT
necessary for performance driving, it improves mileage and other
relative subtleties. Disconnecting it (or a bad, leaky one)
won't affect power. It isn't the culprit here.

Small vacuum leaks won't affect part throttle accelleration
unless it's a big hole! But then it wouldn't idle well or at all.

You didn't say it was misfiring so I assume it's not. That
would indicate crazy (broken) timing or super lean.

Firing order right? There are wrong combinations that will idle
OK but not drive!

Sounds like a carb problem to me. You said you just rebuilt it;
float level wrong? Misassembled midrange/main jet? Something
wrong up at the air horn/venturi? Plugged fuel line/filter?

Does blipping the accell pump make the revs come up? That's a
sure quick-check for main jet related issues; if you open the
throttle and it bogs like it's out of gas, blip the throttle
a bunch, does it take off then? If so that's carb for sure.

Is carb wet?

Usually "sudden" problems are the thing most recently fiddled
with :-)
