Re: [Amc-list] alternate disc-brake conversion kit

" Mark is going to send me a set to physically eye-ball, and of
" course I'll be writing a review. Might even put them on my car.
" If not I do have a suspension mock-up to work with, and a couple
" parts cars for test fitting. I've already told him these should
" fit Nash/AMC cars back to 52 with drum brakes. It should fit disc
" brake cars if a 1/8" spacer (I suggested two 1/16") is added,

i'm not sure any additional spacer is -necessary-.

" with the exception of 75-78 cars that used the Big Bendix brakes
" (75-78 Matador, 75-76 All).

for these what i'd like to see is if the big mopar rotor which uses
the same bearings [early/mid '70s - early '80s big car, small truck]
would fit this spindle properly. then a new caliper bracket such as
these guys make... [the mopar rotor is ~1" larger than the amc]

the '77-8 small bendix setup used the same calipers as '79-'81 but
the big bendix spindle with a thinner rotor. these could easily be
swapped to the '79-'83 spindle/rotor; afaik that's what amc did in
'79.

" I'm not sure about the Bendix four piston and K-H spindles.

i wouldn't be surprised if they're close enough to the drum spindles
to work. was that '69 reb a drum car or disk? the disks would've
been 4-piston.

" The track is increased by the thickness of the bracket -- just as
" it is with a stock AMC bracket. The drum brake spindle flange is
" thicker than a disc brake spindle flange.

i don't think this is universally true. drum brake spindle flanges
were made thicker in the early '70s to match the thickness of the disk
spindles with caliper brackets. i have such a set on my '68 american,
and while 6" rims needed a thin spacer - 5/16" - to clear with the
stock spindles, they now have acres of clearance without spacers. i
think i could run 6.5" or 7" rims up front now.

the 1/4" plates in this kit with stock spindles would -maybe- have
205/70s on 6x14 rims just touching, on '64-9 americans, but i think
you'd be good to go. i ran them with my 5/16" and they cleared.

" The disc flange is
" thinner to partially make up for the 3/8" thick cast caliper
" bracket. I believe the track is increased at least 1/2" (total)
" with the stock setup also.

closer to 1", though maybe not quite that much. what's the difference
in front track between the hornet and american? imho it's all spindle
and/or caliper brackets.
