I was wondering if upper a-arms were made to change out the trunnions, if a
coil over type shock or air ride suspension could be used instead of the
large spring. Using a tubular a-arm could give more space for the shock to
mount through. Just a thought, and I know the trunnions aren't much
different for handling.

Dan, it wouldn't be hard to use a coil over or air bag with trunnions. Well, the 64-69 Amer/Jave/AMX trunnion is closer to the tire than big cars, so it is hard to use an air bag with them, but a coil over mount would be easy enough to make. The shock can stay in the stock position. The stock upper shock mount WILL NOT hold the weight of the car -- a coil over shock would have to be mounted in place of the spring.
