Thanks for your input.  I'll get the data plate info and go with the  
points for now...unfortunately, i'm bound by financial restraint or  
i'd do just as said upgrading to the no-points system.

In brighter news....the car went to total cr@p yesterday, forcing a  
drive to the shop.  Whatever shop it was taken to was great.  They  
put in points (used, but better than mostly dead), tuned the carb,  
timed it (it was way out to 20deg. BTDC), and gave it a general once- 
over.  It's running great even with the vacuum advance still being  
bad.  In fact, I got to take it on *my* maiden voyage with it today  
and drive it the way it was meant to be driven, i figured a week of  
"normal" driving was enough for me to give it the once over.  Let's  
just say that the guy that cut me off at the stop sign and tried to  
drag w/ me will probably not wanna tangle again anytime soon :-D  
(man...what a great stress reliever that was).

When the dead vacuum advance gets repaired, will there a noticeable  
performance increase (yes, i'm a n00b, but learning more every day ).

The shop said that those <insert plural explicative here> that  
rebuilt my engine didn't put the lube on the cam and essentially  
smoked them.  **I** even knew better than that...ugh.

I'm launching a web page soon showing progress.  I had one up long  
ego...but now that there's a 1-tone (primer) car and not mutlicolored  
rust/beige/green/yuck, i can actually show progress.
