Not a thing wrong with a 318 if it saves the car from scrap or Chebbie/Ford power!
I would suggest you look into the truck arm style rear suspension unless it will be a track only car.
Wasn't it you that built a circle track car for someone? The Classic already has a beefy section in it's middle to help handle the tube. It should be fairly easy to fab and rework for a truck arm setup.
