John,

As I recall from looking at the "Performance American Style" book published
by AMC in the early 70s, the flange at the back of the crankshaft has to be
machined. The recess that the button on the torque converter fits into must
be enlarged and then an adapter used to properly locate the 727 torque
converter. I'm not sure about driveshaft length. The adapter part number was
321 6130. I think some one still makes them but I can't remember who. If you
go that route you should be able to find reprints of the book on ebay if you
want it.
